After reading this blog I will pay more attention to how the low carbs impacts my cognitive functioning. Now that I believe I am in good control of my blood sugar, the emotional impact on cognitive functioning should be diminished. I know last Spring, when my diabetes was first diagnosed, I was having a great deal of difficulty with concentration and memory.AliceInWonderlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07021850621098826917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13260386.post-55354336110455376042007-09-26T03:22:00.000-05:002007-09-26T03:22:00.000-05:00I was diagnosed last Spring. However, I did increase physical activity and consciously watched my carbs and fats, but didn't completely eliminate either. I was given a test by surprise by my doctor and all my levels were down, including cholesterol. Meanwhile, between him giving me the test and me going in for the results, about a month period (my fault) I got mad, started cardiovascular and a stricter diet. When I went in after that month I had lost 11 pounds, but was having tingling and numbness and was scared to death. He gave me another blood test and the results were even better! I backed off on the strictness of the diet, a bit, and the symptoms of numbness and tingling have diminished after a week. However, I am still restricting carbs, but eating some whole grains, because I believe it works, and I am watching what kind of fats I am eating, though it is and has been primarily the POLYunsaturated and hydrogenated oils. I haven't eliminated fats from meats, though I don't eat a whole lot of red meats, I have been eating some and even Kielbasa and sausage prior to the great tests and even on the stricter diet, yum, yum.AliceInWonderlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07021850621098826917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13260386.post-1155770496710342092006-08-16T18:21:00.000-05:002006-08-16T18:21:00.000-05:00That's what happened to my Dad. He eats tons of startches because no one in authority ever told him that they raise blood sugar.

I'm in a different state than him, but I did sent him one of Berstein's books to see if that can help him keep his blood sugar under control.

I take after him and do NOT want to get Type 2 diabetes. That's one reason I'm eating low-carn NOW. So far it's been working. My insulin levels are on the low side. :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13390991269990163088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13260386.post-1155673520252122472006-08-15T15:25:00.000-05:002006-08-15T15:25:00.000-05:00On the one hand I agree with your position about t...On the one hand I agree with your position about the need to reduce carbs for diabetics. On the other hand,...I know from first hand experience in dealing with memebers of my own family that trying to get some people to change thier dietary paterns is an exercise in futility and they would be better off if they had just started the meds early.K.
